The EU’s banking watchdog — which polices the biggest stablecoins and helps oversee the financial sector’s IT resilience — has a new head.
What happened
François-Louis Michaud took up the role of Chair of the European Banking Authority (EBA) on 16 April 2026, succeeding José Manuel Campa (EBA). The European Parliament confirmed the appointment on 10 March 2026; the term runs five years, renewable once. Michaud had been the EBA’s Executive Director since 1 September 2020 — that post is now vacant, and the EBA says it will launch recruitment for a successor.
Why it matters
The EBA is the EU-level supervisor for issuers of “significant” asset-referenced and e-money tokens under MiCA — the slice of crypto supervision centralised in Brussels rather than left to national regulators — and one of the three European Supervisory Authorities running the DORA oversight regime for critical ICT providers. A change at the top sets the tone for both.
